“Art is a language that speaks to all mankind and nurtures the civilized spirit in each of us. We will remember the dynamic spirit of the Go West project through the amazing energy charged dialogues and interactions of cross cultures” Dr. Carolyn Farb, Go West Texas Ambassadress of the Arts
About
The first of its kind, this innovative program, founded by Karine Parker-Lemoyne, invites two cultural and geographic worlds to resonate as well as two human entities to bond: artists and public. Our ambition is to invite to exceed the conventional clichés, to break barriers, and to provide a deeper and richer insight on each of these worlds. Go West I and its catalog are seen as an opportunity to explore these dialogues and territories designed by artists and fostered by their roots, both old and new. Go West I is a non-comercial show funded by a Rubber: An Art Mob, a Houston based non-profit arts organization. The mission of Go West I is to create new artistic bridges between Paris, France and Houston, Texas; to foster understanding and advancement of art produced by well regarded and emerging Texan and French contemporary artists; to bridge the gap of communication and allow for deeper insight between artists and the general public. Visuals Arts, music, and literature. All these disciplines come together in Go West I to explore the diversity of our cultures, to embrace our differences, and build a perennial, rich and fertile relationship: French and Texan visual artists, musicians, writers, and poets are in the heart of an original artistic and cultural experience. The Go West I exhibit debuted on September 20, 2011 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. Cultural offerings of various kinds, including jazz music by Konstantine, small-group exchanges with the artists featured in the exhibit, Hang Drum music and Texan music animated the night. Unesco's American Ambassador, David T. Killion, who inaugurated the exhibit, expressed his wish that the event serve as “yet another step forward—perhaps a Texas-sized one—to bring people from across the oceans together and advance peace through art.” His remarkswere joined by those of Mickey Henry (President of the Texas-French Alliance for the Arts and a representative of the Mayor of Houston), Hubert Reeves (president of the organization Humanity & Biodiversity), and Karine Parker-Lemoyne (a founder and co-organizer of Go West 1).Two days later the Ambassador and Mrs. Killion hosted a reception at the diplomatic residence to recognize the incredible work of the curators, artists, and other organizers involved in bringing the exhibit to life. Like the exhibit, the soirée featured a lively mixture of French and Texan personalities. Combining the representatives of two such distinctly different, proud, and enthusiastic cultures made for an upbeat and unforgettable evening. Various representatives expressed their satisfaction both with the event and with the exhibit. The U.S. delegation is particularly proud to have supported an offering that so honors UNESCO's ideals of international peace and dialogue. As Jim Edwards, co-curator of the exhibit, wrote: “Today what separates communication between the artists of France and Texas can be remedied in a day of transatlantic flight and in a manner of seconds via the internet.” In a world increasingly marked by interconnectedness, all who took part in the event were delighted to experience the energy that comes from peaceful and creative collaboration, collaboration which poignantly illustrates the value of UNESCO’s mission.
